Winter crop effect on soybean production in the Southeast United States

Abstract Various winter crops can be produced before soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr] in the Southeast United States, however effect of these on productivity and optimum maturity group to use following various remains unknown. This experiment was conducted five environments across North Carolina 2019 2020 understand crop (MG) productivity. Winter investigated included cereal rye ( Secale cereale L.) as cover crop, rye–crimson clover Trifolium incarnatum mixture, May fallow, wheat Triticum aestivum for grain, rapeseed Brassica napus June fallow. Three cultivars (MGs III, V, VII) were evaluated each crop. Data collected crop/residue biomass, grain yields, stand, soil moisture, temperature, chlorophyll content, yield. Across environments, did not affect yield despite differences content crops. The results indicate that this experiment, factors such or N availability limiting response is relatively insensitive previous crops, greater yields typically achieved with a MGs V VII cultivar than MG III cultivar. Results from demonstrate insensitivity allows flexibility incorporating into rotations regardless optimized later when standard management practices are employed.
